Lotty Dotty | Key Components in Personal Growth | Learning and growing as a person is something we do our whole lives to realize our full potential. To understand better what we are dealing with, let’s go through the key components of personal growth and development.
Personal development is influenced by both one’s immediate surroundings and one’s genetic makeup. Scientists have argued for years about whether or not our upbringing is more important than heredity. So far, the only reasonable conclusion is that they both play significant roles in molding who we become.
Science states that the chromosome make-up that we inherited from our parents is what forms us as individuals– that’s why some of us may inherit the nose of either our dads or moms. Then there are also genetic features that are passed on to the subsequent generation via the grandchildren or great-grandchildren rather than the parents. The term “hereditary factor” describes this phenomenon.
Ability and aptitude are the next crucial components that play a significant role in one’s personal growth and development. Aptitude is not the same as ability. Aptitude is an innate competency to do a certain kind of work. It is the potential that could yet be tapped or trained in a person. Ability, on the other hand, refers to what a person is presently able to do. It can refer to the skills and putting into practice what one knows. Skills, in contrast to aptitude, are not transmitted from generation to generation. Although one’s capacity or aptitude to learn a skill is heritable, the skill must be learned, applied, and developed through experience.
The impact of a child’s environment will be revealed in his conduct. Naturally, a child will pick up information from his immediate environment, be it other people or objects– including basic skills such as eating, walking, and talking, and also how to behave in social situations. That is why people who are constantly around a child will have will either favorably or negatively influence the development of his personality.
From a very young age until around the age of five, it is usually our parents and other close relatives who have had the most effect on our behavior and identity. By the time we’re old enough to attend school, the friends and peers we spend the most time with have a significant impact on who we become as an individual.
Personal growth shouldn’t cease once we reach adulthood, no matter how much our upbringing and early experiences in the home, in school, etc. shaped us. Having a clear knowledge of the factors that have affected our development since childhood can help us to pinpoint areas of improvement in ourselves.
Self-growth is a continuous process to increase our satisfaction and quality of life. Let us never cease committing a course of action to improving ourselves to ensure a life that is meaningful, beneficial, and empowering.
